Swanage Pier in England & Wales If you are looking for a site to cut your teeth for UK diving then the pier has to be it. There is so much life under there I never tire of it. Big mature lobsters, crabs, sea hares, pipefish, scorpion fish, mullet, seabass, blennies, anemonies, bibs.... Swanage is also a beautiful seaside town. Well worth a long weekend.

Portland in England & Wales If diving Portland/Weymouth, I would recommend venturing out to the wrecks outside the harbour itself. You will get much better visibility than in the harbour where less than a metre's viz is common! Check out Fathom and Blues for a dive operation. Really good set up.

Eastbourne in England & Wales Diving the English Channel is not for the faint hearted or inexperienced diver. Currents can be very strong so be careful to pick slack. A nice sedate dive is, however, the light tower. Bottoming out at around 14 metres there is plenty of life to see and it makes a cracking second dive.

Soufriere to Anse Cochon in St Lucia The diving in St Lucia is not spectacular but is very nice indeed. The weather was very poor at the start of November however, and the persistent rain eventually seriously diminished the visibility.

Madeira in Madeira Archipelago Madeira Divepoint is a fantastically well run operation and Madeira is a much overlooked diving destination. You don't get the tropical corals but the underwater topography is very dramatic and there are plenty of holes, gullies and crevasses to explore, all with masses of life. Also, being in the atlantic, there is always the chance of something big passing by. Dolphins and whales are seen regularly from the shore. I must also mention the resident groupers at Garajau. Many an hour spent with these friendly, welcoming giants. I would recommend the island generally as the people are friendly, there is masses to do, and restaurants and bars are plentiful and usually excellent.

Ambergris Cay in Belize In my opinion Belize offers some of the finest diving in the Caribbean. Seahorses, toadfish, eagle rays, stingrays, sharks and turtles (to name a few) in abundance. My main concern was the difficulty in obtaining nitrox; a military operation to secure fills for more than one dive. Ambergris Cay is a delightful place to visit in any case. The people are very friendly and seem to understand at what pace life should be lived. Highly recommended.

Turneffe Island in Belize We stayed aboard The Nekton Pilot whilst diving the Northern offshore reefs of Belize. The diving around these reefs is great and I feel it was just unlucky that we did not see many of the bigger residents that Belize can be known for. Nonetheless, there is masses of life to search for such as rarer animals like seahorses and toadfish. If you are a fan of easy liveaboard diving then the Nekton Pilot is a dream. The SWATH design means stability like no other and the huge hydraulic dive deck makes for relaxing kitting up and setting down. Great food, comfortable cabins and loads of room are only surpassed by the staff who can't do enough for you. Catering to the U.S. market, everything is done for you. This seems a little alien at times for us brits!

Northumberland Coast in England & Wales Good wholesome UK diving. The seals are worth coming up for alone, but there is plenty of other life in and around the kelp that fringe the Farne Islands. It can't be knocked until it is tried.

Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt Nothing much to add to everybody elses opinions but beware, March is not warm water diving in the Nothern Red Sea. Also be prepared for a very long day at sea for just a couple of dives on day boats.

Grand Cayman in Cayman Islands The West End of Grand Cayman is the commercial epicentre and the vast majority of dive operators are on Seven Mile Beach. For quieter, more exciting and varied diving make the short journey to the East End. Loads of deep walls and expanses of reef with lots of swim throughs and an abundance of life make for some truly fantastic diving. Also, Stingray City is a must (snorkelling is just as good as diving), for the experience and so you can say 'I've done that' every time you see it on TV!

Punta Cana in Dominican Republic Beautiful beaches and a very nice place to holiday but the diving is limited. Trips to Catalina island and Bayahibe are well worthwhile as the sites are excellent.

Bayahibe in Dominican Republic Catalina Island has some of the finest coral reef to be found in the Caribbean. Spend hours with your head stuck in checking out the residents. Whilst at Bayahibe you must dive the Saint George. As you descent the line to the wreck it is quite a sight and a cracker for wreck photographers.

South Male Atoll in Maldives I did my open water in the Maldives and have to say that it rather spoilt me. I came away thinking every dive would have sharks, turtles, giant morays and Napoleon Wrasse. Stoney Cove has since dispelled that somewhat! The diving is fantastic in the Maldives; exhilirating drifts, fascinating Macro life, and pelagics in abundance. Unfortunately El Nino had decimated a lot of coral although this did not seem to affect the resident marine life and evidence of considerable regeneration was clear at most sites. I understand that the reefs continue to flourish. My biggest beef with diving in the Maldives is cost. Keep a close eye on your bill and watch for add ons such as the boat rides as they are often charged seperately by the resort. It is very easy for the charges to escalate as the diving is like a drug, and you always want one more.
