Channel Islands in United States (west) I spent 3 days aboard the Conception out of Santa Barbara over Thanksgiving Weekend. Our goal was San Miguel Island, but as often happens, severe weather limited out trip to Santa Cruz Island. We hit some very pretty sites with kelp beds and 40+ ft. vis. The captain drove the boat into Painted Cave, the largest sea cave in the world. I'm getting some great pictures with my new camera, Nikon D80, and the crew was very respectful and helpful with my expensive equipment.

Channel Islands in United States (west) I went out on the Raptor from Ventura Dive & Sport for the first time. I was plesantly surprised by the quality of the crew. The boat could get crowded if it was packed to it's limit with divers. The current and surge were ripping this weekend, which made many usual dive spots unaccessable. It had just rained a couple of days before and has caused pea soup green water and now a Red Tide. Vis was down to less than 20 ft. Any day diving is better than not diving at all! I still had fun.

Channel Islands in United States (west) This was my first time we made it out San Miguel Isl. I see now why it can be very hit or miss when going there. High winds will keep any but the hardiest of divers out of the water. Good to see so many black abalone on the come back. Now I want to see more down south before they reopen for hunting.

Channel Islands in United States (west) We went out with Truth Aquatics out of Santa Barbara for a two day liveaboard. Little dissappointed that we didn't make it to San Miguel Isl. but weather dictates. The vis wasn't the best, but it was still good enough to capture some great pistures of my favorite nudibranchs and other macro images. The Truth crew was fantastic!

Maui in Hawaii Ed Robinson's is a great outfit who can cater to the more advanced diver! We never made it all the way to Lanai unfortunately...never use Maui Dive Shop again. This time of year is tough for the more usual pelagics but we were treated to Humpback whales every ride out and heard them underwater. Frogfish were everywhere for the trained eye. Quite a few White Tip Reef Sharks too.

Maui in Hawaii Of the two must dive spots while on Maui, the back side of Molikini offered some great deep diving opportunities, the other is Lanai Cathedrals. Ed Robinson's took us out there on a very low current day, so it wasn't as much of a drift dive as everyone says it is. Not many reef fish on the islands and not too impressive overall if you have ever been to Indonesia, Carribbean or even California, but we got wet! We heard the Humpback whales underwater!

Channel Islands in United States (west) We went on the Conception out of Santa Barbara. Truth Aquatics really knows how to take care of their customers. Diving for the day was on Santa Cruz because of the weather on the more northern islands was poor. Blue Banks offered a wonderful opportunity for video and still photography. Kelp forrests were in pristine condition.

Channel Islands in United States (west) Aboard the Spectre this month. That hot tub is a post dive gift from God. Portuguese Rock had the best vis (25ft max) on a bad day. There were so many new and different nudibranches and steadfast Garibaldi I want to dive this spot over and over again!

Key Largo in United States (south) Diving in Key Largo was better than on the other keys. Water temp was 78-80 degF with 30-50 ft of vis. The amount of coral damage was fairly depressing, but we were still able to enjoy a lot of great dives with Capt. Jeff on the HMS Minnow.

Key West in United States (south) The combination of low vis, 15-25 ft, and complete destruction of most of the coral really made me want to forget I ever payed to dive Key West. Stay away, dive the north keys or furter south into the Caribbean.

Channel Islands in United States (west) Recent rains brought current, low viz, 10-15ft, and cold water, 52-53degF to Anacapa Isl., but the crew aboard the Explorer was wonderful at finding the best sites in the worst conditions. Lots of colorful urchins and nudibranchs.

Catalina in United States (west) Eagle Reef is out in mid water with a current and no shore to navigate from, so dive operations don't frequent this place with less experienced divers. Typical depth is 35-40fsw to as deep as you want. Many reef fish, octopus, and huge lobsters. Wish I had my license and a game bag! We went with Catalina Divers and Supply aboard the Scuba Cat.

La Paz in Mexico (west) December is the off season, but the diving is outstanding. Winter here is pretty windy, so it limits the dive boats to certain reefs. Thousands of fish from fry to full grown.

Channel Islands in United States (west) We saw our 2nd Giant Black Sea Bass, 4 ft, kelp was georgous, but the sea lions didn't want to play with us;-(

Catalina in United States (west) This dive has got to be on the top of every California diver's wish list. Its deep 60' to 130'+. The vis was unbelievable and the pink Cal. hydrocoral is amazing. We used the Sundiver out of Long Beach. Never again! Crew was rude and unhelpful.

Channel Islands in United States (west) We saw our first Giant Black Sea Bass, 6 feet long, at a site called The Channels at the north tip of Anacapa Island.

Catalina in United States (west) Shore entry was never made easier...use the stairs. Kelp forests are a wonder of their own. Lots of Blue Banded Gobies and Girabaldi.

Hawaii in Hawaii The Manta Ray Night Dive is one of the worlds best overall dives. These huge creatures are acrobatic and majestic. We had 12 this night with 15 ft wing spans. I can't say enough about how cool this experience was.
