Subic Bay in Philippines Plan to have lots of wreck diving but ran into a severe tropical storm. Only got two dives in on the barges artificial wreck and the excellent penetration dive on the El Capitan. Really only scratched the surface so hope to get back and revisit the wrecks. Blue Rock was fun with good food and great service. Like McArthur, I shall return.

Moalboal, Cebu in Philippines Not a very inspiring town but the diving was good. The thresher sharks at Pescador Island were the highlight, although there were lots of good macro as well. Great variety of crabs and shrimps and an excellent night dive sight just off shore from Cebu Dive Centre. We were quite a large group of adults and students and Cebu Dive looked after us well. Lots of turtles and a fabulous sardine ball (hence the thresher sharks). Worth a week but you would probably have seen the best of everything by then.

Balicasag Island in Philippines Great wall dives with a gentle drift. Big school of jacks and barracuda but not much else of any size. Hard and soft corals good but quite a few crown of thorn sea stars in the shallows. Stayed at Oasis and dived at Sea Quest. Would recommend both. Lots of reef fish and a couple of turtles. Several sightings of sea moths, which were new to me. Nice place for a relaxed break, with a variety of diving.

Anilao, Batangas in Philippines Spent a week at Anilao staying at Bambu Villa. Comfortable accommodation but some issues with consistent electricity. Bit overpriced for what it was but a work in progress. Staff were excellent! 41 active dive sites of which I only dived 13. Generally excellent diving with lots to look at. Dive sites very easily accessible with a good variety of depth and difficulty. Dived with Ronnie Corpuz from Rob Ryan Divers who was excellent. While it is not one of the Philippines most spectacular sites it is easily accessible from Manila and provides lots of easy dives and photographic opportunities. A fascinating new muck dive at Secret Bay was a photographers' paradise with most unusual critters like black walking frogfish, flying gurnards, thorny seahorses and left-eye flounder. Hot springs rise up from various parts of the bay. Definitely worth a look.

Bali in Indonesia Went hunting mola mola but no luck there. Huge sea snake was some compensation at Crystal Bay. Interesting dive because of some quite tricky currents but lots to look at with heaps of fish including some huge tuna. Second dive was at a part of Nusa Penida called 'SD' because of the local elementary school nearby. 30m vis and some of the best coral I have seen made it a fantastic dive. Heaps of fish including some great scorpionfish. One of the best coral dives I have done.

South-West Rocks in Australia (East) The cave is a famous dive on the coast. I did four dives over two days and really enjoyed it. Lots of fish and heaps of cruising grey nurse sharks. The cave was full of fish and lobsters and even had some trapped air pockets. Visibility was around 10 metres but I was told it is much better in the summer. We had the added bonus of a family of humpback whales playing around the rock within about twenty metres of the dive boat. Fantastic! Really enjoyed it and I would like to return in the summer>

Bali in Indonesia Dived Tulumben with Bali Scuba. Not great weather but vis OK. Lots of fish on the wreck and saw yellow frogfish and pygmy seahorses. Got in three dives and had a very good day despite the travelling. Can't wait to go back to do Nusa Penida next time.

Hong Kong in China (Peoples Republic) Diving again with students. Best visibility I have seen in HK (3-5 metres, not saying much!) Few fish to look at and water very cold. Still, better than a usual HK dive.

Hong Kong in China (Peoples Republic) Two Dives with a group of Open Water students. Never dived Po Toi before but went searching for shelter from a Force 6 gale. Found shelter but visibility was appalling. The good thing about diving in Hong Kong is that you know wherever you go next will be better. Felt sorry for the students!

Boracay Island in Philippines Returned to do Yapak 2 and ended up doing it twice because of poor visibility the first time. Lots of current and a few reef sharks about. Crocodile Island and Coral Garden were also lovely dives. Did a photography specialty which was a lot of fun. Boracay is always fun. Love the food and the beach! New Wave Divers were great as usual and had a day with Sea Gaia as well. They were also good.

Brisbane in Australia (East) A great day's winter wreck diving. Water cold and visibility not great but lots of wrecks to look at and lots of fish. Two huge turtles spotted: one asleep in a wreck. Redcliffe Divers are excellent. Would highly recommend them. Dozens of wrecks have been sunk here since 1968.

Byron Bay in Australia (East) Couple of lovely cold water dives. Lots of fish, turtles and half a dozen good sized grey nurse sharks. Dived with Sundive who were excellent. Dived both Cod Hole and Hugo's trench and both were worth it. Added bonus of breaching humpbacks on the boat trip out. Can't wait to get back at Christmas for a summer dive.

Jew Shoal in Australia (East) A great wreck dive. We did an orientation dive followed by a penetration dive. Has been really well set up to allow easy penetration for relatively inexperienced divers. Will return in a couple of months to do a wreck specialty on it. Highly recommend Go-Dive from Brisbane. Very organised and professional. Great wreck which will only improve as a reef with time.

Boracay Island in Philippines Did my Deep specialty with Jon-Jon Suarez from New Wave Divers. He was an excellent instructor - extremely positive and thorough. Unfortunately my dive at Yapak 2 (purportedly Boracay's best dive) was marred by me not being able to equalise easily so by the time we got to 30 metres the current had taken us past the best part of the wall. That's one for next time! Yapak 1 the following day along with the Camia wreck and Crocodile Island were all very enjoyable, and very different dives. Lots of reef fish, eagle rays and a huge green turtle. Also lots of little jellyfish this time of the year as well, so best to be covered. No nasties though. New Wave Divers was a very minimalist, no frills operation but excellent to dive with. Boracay a beautiful place and very family friendly. Would love to go back!

Cook Island, Tweed Heads in Australia (East) Started the day at Nine Mile Reef, a bit further out than Cook Island. Lots of fish, Wobbegongs, Zebra Sharks and Morays. A full boat and no divemaster which I thought was a bit odd as none of us had dived the area before. Cook Island in the afternoon was not as interesting in terms of wildlife. The area has a great reputation so I would like to go back and dive it with someone who knew the area. I don't think we saw the best of it.

Puerto Galera in Philippines Did my Advanced Open Water with a group of students from my school. LaLaguna Beach Resort instructors were fantastic. Had 16 typhoons before our arrival so a lot of coral damage. Very focussed on diving and not a family tourist resort. Great weather and enjoyed the diving with the Canyons and Hole in the Wall being the highlights. Good place for school groups.

Hong Kong in China (Peoples Republic) Hong Kong, quite rightly, is not a diving Mecca. Visibility is generally poor and this was no exception. A long boat trip required to get away from the pollution and while it was interesting to have a look, it is not surprising that the large family of Hong Kong divers fly elsewhere to dive.
