The Rainbow Warrior’s underwater life began in 1985 when French Secret Service agents placed two limpet mines against her hull to prevent her being taken by a Greenpeace crew to protest the French testing of nuclear weapons at Mururoa Atoll. The explosion blew two holes into the hull and killed Greenpeace photographer Fernando Pereira. The Rainbow Warrior was eventually refloated by the New Zealand Navy and towed to the Cavalli Islands where she was scuttled as an artificial reef in 1987. She now lies off the western end of Hamaruru Island in 25 metres of water.
