S.S. Yongala
Located in: Australasia >> Australia (East) >> Townsville
The SS Yongala sank in a cyclone on the 23 March 1911 remaining undiscovered for almost 50 years and was not positively identified until 1966. Lying in 14-28 metres of water and 100m long it is the largest and most intact historic shipwreck in Australian waters.
My first wreck dive just last week (Nov 2006) and first dive to 30 metres after gaining Advanced Cert. Very rough conditions and strong current. Most difficult part was getting back on the boat without being knocked out. Many divers were sea sick, some unable to dive due to rough conditions. Once underwater saw plenty of olive sea snakes (very friendly!), Giant Trevally, a few clown fish...highlight was HUGE green sea turtle swimming with us. This was an awesome dive. I travelled down the coast from Townsville to Ayr and dived with Yongala Dive. Only 40 minutes boat ride out to the wreck. We had a great day with breakfast in the morning and a BBQ lunch when we got back. THe divers were a mixed group from Advanced through to Instructor. The fish were awesome, also saw turtles, oloive sea snakes. This was my first wreck dive and can't wait to get back there one day. Date posted: 25-Oct-2006 10:04 by: Jules who thought that:

I dived this wreck in 2001 and it was awesome. I was new to diving but didn't find it difficult. It is without a doubt the best wreck dive I have done. The Groupers are ginormous!! You cannot go to Queensland and not do this dive! Date posted: 21-Oct-2006 10:53 by: Michelle who thought that:

fantastic dive, but sometimes the conditions are not suitable for inexperienced divers with limted depth experience. I have experienced strong currents that will limit bottom time for the non-confident divers. Date posted: 22-Jan-2006 22:39 by: ade who thought that:
Only experienced wreck divers should attempt this.
