El Meridian
Located in: European Coast >> Canaries >> Tenerife
The Meridian was a german WWII mine sweeper used in later life as a dolphin viewing ship, but now sits on the seabed at 30m not far from the Condesita wreck, having been deliberately sunk as a dive attraction. Currently still has its mast and some rigging standing and all areas inside the wreck are accessible although the companionway to the engine room is quite narrow. Due to the square profile and depth of this dive, this is suitable for advanced divers only but makes for an excellent Nitrox Dive.
Great wreck. Steel superstructure and wooden hull. You can enter the bridge and read the dials etc. (thankfully still intact and long may this remain so !). The ship was being towed out to a shallower dive location but went down before they got there. Hence it's quite deep (upto 30m) and the current runs fast at this exposed spot. Therefore a AOW dive with good fins on ! Descent is via a line. Ascent can be along the mast. Viz fantastic. You can see all of the wreck from the surface. It makes for a nice view as you ascend to the safety stop. Date posted: 21-Dec-2006 11:33 by: Russ who thought that:
