There is no doubt that if you want to get the best diving in the Maldives, you should go on a liveaboard. This is because a liveaboard enables you to visit the best sites according to the prevailing winds and currents. For example, in the North East season (from December to May) you will find manta rays on the west side of the atolls (the back of the current) and thrilling shark life, good visibility and a vibrant reef on the east side of the atolls (the front of the current). If you are on a liveaboard, you can cross from one side of the atoll to the other to enjoy both types of diving. A liveaboard will offer more diving than a resort island and the better boats will steam a good distance to ensure dives at a good selection of dive sites.

Currents and prevailing conditions in the Maldives can be complicated to predict and understand and it is essential, if you want to make the most of your dive trip, that your chosen liveaboard is run by a diver who has a thorough understanding of the area and marine life.

Liveaboard trips usually begin in North Male Atoll and a two week trip would take you to dive in two or three atolls. Sea conditions are usually good throughout the trip as you spend much of the time inside the atolls within the protected reef area.

Most of the liveaboards operate 3/4 dives a day and diving takes place from a dive support boat called a dhoni which might be 40ft or so. This support vessel is important for your safety as it can move easily in and out of the reef's and channels; your equipment is kept on board, which means carrying of heavy dive kit is kept to a minimum. It's a good system and makes for very easy diving.

The diving is amazing with prolific life - huge volumes of fish and a tremendous variety of species large and small. For those who love the big stuff, there's manta rays, a great selection of shark species, turtles, whalesharks and masses of pelagic fish. And if it's the macro side of diving you're looking for, you'll be in heaven.
