It may not be the easiest place in the world to get to, but, it's worth every second of it. You have to fly into Male and then catch an internal flight to the old RAF base at Gan.
We stayed at the Equator Village when we went. It's not this Ritz but it's got everything you need for a holiday. Restaurant, Bar, Pool, health suit, (that's well worth it), free bicycle hire, and wild Chickens! (That's not a joke). The food is good and there's plenty of it. The staff are excellent and always willing to help. There's an internet cafe & a Bank just down the road, shops etc etc etc...
The dive school there is run by a German gentleman named Axel Horn. This mans been diving for ever and has forgotten more about diving and underwater photography than most people know. His staff are friendly and good at their jobs. They also do rebreather diving, Buddy inspirations. It's worth looking at the website. http://www.divegan.com/english/index.htm that'll give you a good feel for the setup there.
The diving is great! One of the best things about the diving is there is no chance of running into another group of divers on the same site, because there is only one school there.
The diving itself is as good if not better than the rest of the Maldives. The soft coral is outstanding. The reefs are in very good condition, loads of sealife. The list of life we saw is too long to list, grey reef and white tip sharks, moray, of all flavours, frog fish, ribbon eels, eagle and manta, if it's calm enough you can even get on the outer reefs and see ocean going manta, which I beleive are huge. Turtles, dolphin, whale sharks, this list goes on. There's even a wartime wreck in the Atoll called the British Loyalty. Most people think it was sunk by a Japanese mini sub, but it was actually a german u-boat. Drift dives
Diving is usually from the local Dhoni type boat.
But anyway it's well worth the little extra hassle to get there. Quite reefs, good viz, loads of life and good guides. What more do you need?
