It is not until recent years that Koh Lanta has received the reputation it truly deserves - that of a first class dive destination. Many divers come for the world famous spots Hin Daeng and Hin Mouang, and maybe it is the excellence of these two submerged rocks that is the reason why dive guide authors tend to forget about the other dive sites in this area. The Koh Lanta dive operators basically cover three different areas.

The Koh Ha area consists of 6 islands (Koh Ha actually means five islands, but must have been named by someone lacking basic mathematical skills). The Koh Ha area offers a variety of vertical walls, sloping reefs and a number of caves. It has something for everyone, from the novice diver to the more experienced. It is very beautiful but not particularly deep,so if you like to go below 35m it is a good idea to bring a shovel. When the whale sharks are around they often visit the islands around Koh Haa.

The Koh Bida area is situated close to the Phi Phi Islands, and is another one of the areas within a short distance from Koh Lanta. The character of the dive sites at Koh Bida is similar to those at Koh Ha, with some major differences. When you are diving around Bida Nok, Bida Nai or Hin Bida (a submerged reef between Lanta and Phi Phi) you will most likely dive with leopard sharks. But even without the leopard shark Koh Bida offers a stunning variety of under water marine life.

The third area around Koh Lanta to visit is the world famous reefs of Hin Daeng and Hin Mouang, definitely two of the very best dive sites in Thailand. Hin Mouang, with the deepest drop off in Thai waters is covered with fantastic purple coral. In recent years this has been one of the surest places to dive with the beautiful Manta Rays. Just a few hundred meters from Hin Mouang you will find Hin Daeng, which offers an exciting variety of diving. Just as beautiful as Hin Mouang but very different, when diving Hin Daeng you feel as if you are diving in a labyrinth and of course the Manta Rays are very much present here as well. Whale sharks? With a little luck these huge fish turn up here as well and many divers have had the unforgettable experience of diving with both whale sharks and Mantas around at the same time.

The diving season is between 1 November and 31 April. May and June also offer good diving conditions, but as these two months have traditionally been considered as "low season" on Koh Lanta there is a risk that you will not find any dive operator to take you out.

Koh Lanta is a lot more than diving. It is a very relaxed island, and for those who are coming for a laid back atmosphere it is perfect. Most of the small, nice restaurants or bamboo bars you find on the beaches. During the last couple of years the number of good restaurants in Saladan, the village on the north tip of the island, has increased as well. However, if you are looking for wild parties or girlie bars, this is probably not the place to go.

Now days it is easy to reach Koh Lanta. Fly directly to Krabi airport and then you have about 40 minutes in a minibus until you reach the first of two car ferries that will bring you across to the northern part of the island. You can also go by passenger boat from Krabi, Ao Nang, Phuket or Phi Phi. The passenger ferries are usually only running in the high season, so if you are going to Lanta in May - October, make sure that you check the time table first. There are lots of resorts on the island and you can find good accommodation from 150 thb to 90 000 thb per night! If you are a diver it might be a good idea not to choose a resort to far south on the island, as most of the dive boats leaves from Saladan in the north. The nicest beaches are Klong Dau beach and Phrae Ae also known as Long Beach but there are many small beaches further down the island and even if the swimming is not too good due to the rocks, the beaches are quite beautiful.

If you take a day off from the diving and do not just want to stay in your hammock, we can recommend a motor bike trip to the east side of the island. Lots of small genuine Sea Gypsy villages to visit and of course Lanta Old Town, is a lovely small village about 25 km from Saladan. The roads in the last couple of months have been concreted all over the island, so these days the visitors no longer suffer from the red dust which used to be a rather unpleasant tourist attraction.
