When you want to lose the rest of the world and simply turn off from the pressures of life, Nuweiba is the place to head for. About 185km north of Sharm El Sheikh, this resort oasis nestles between the azure turquoise of the Gulf of Aqaba and the high desert mountains of the Sinai. From Sharm El Sheikh, your drive through these mountains is experience enough - where camels and Bedouin roam seemingly aimless and where the strata of the granite rock is shot with reds and greens, courtesy of the deposits of iron and copper ore.
The 7 km golden, soft, sand beach of Nuweiba is a non-divers paradise - ideal for families and couples - whilst the diver can expect excellent diving for all levels. The diving in the area runs from Devils Head and in the north to Abu Gallum in the south and is mainly accessed from the shore by jeep or even camel due the lack of jetty facilities or safe anchorages for boats. The best dive site in the area is probably Ras Mamlach situated in the Abu Galum National Park, this is the highlight of a week's diving. It's a 1.5 hour drive along the desert road by Jeep to get there but it's a worthwhile trip. The reef starts at about 12 m, with a beautiful coral garden and on to steep wall that bottoms out at 70 m plus. Beautiful fan and table corals covered with soft corals and the intensive blue of the Gulf of Aqaba, a fantastic picture. The variety of the underwater life opens a new world; Barracudas, Jackfish, Groupers and much, much more. Two dives are not enough to see everything! Other sports include horse riding, Watersports and mini-golf, as well as regular Oriental shows.
There is also a strong chance of seeing Ollin, the famous Nuweiba dolphin, which has befriended a local Bedouin. A board outside the Hilton Hotel maps the dolphin's movements and where she has chosen to spend her day, never too far away, along with her 3-year old and the latest addition, her young calf (April 2004).
