Lighthouse reef is well offshore. We went there from Caye Caullker by speedboat on a 3 tank dive day.

THE highlight is 'The Blue Hole', a colapsed ancient cavern, discovered by mister Cousteau himself. You dive down along a straight wall to about 40 m to see the first stalactites and undercuts. At this depth you only see a black hole beneath you. Visibility can be low in the beginning but gets usually better in the deeper section. You might be lucky to see some reef sharks, but that's it concerning fish life. Snorkelling around the rim would be much more rewarding to see corals and fish. This is a surely a must-do dive, but one visit should be enough.

Another spot in Lighthouse reef is Half Moon Caye, a natural Monument and around Long Caye with all the typical caribbean underwater world.

The day is very long with a start at 5.30 a.m. to be around 8 a.m. at the blue hole. The speedboat is back to caye Caulker at around 5 p.m.

A live-aboard woud be far more comfortable.

Due to the distance to the shore visibility is good in general, encounters with eagle rays and nurse sharks are common. Other sightings include snappers, jacks, turtle, french angel fish, black groupers and lots more.
